Kolaches and Running? Count Us In! Kolache Factory Challenge 5K Fun Run Debuts May 5

Inaugural event pays tribute to one of Texas’ defining pastries

Finally, something worth running for: kolaches.

On Saturday morning May 5, the Kolache Factory Challenge 5K run debuts in the Energy Corridor District. But this is not your typical fun run because its challenging participants to eat kolaches during the race.

As a city known to eat kolaches on the run, this is one race a lot of folks in Houston have already trained for.

Sign up for this challenge and you will be tasked with eating three sausage and cheese kolaches from Kolache Factory, the event’s title sponsor, halfway through the 5K, before running the rest of the race. For the kolache lightweights among us, there is also a “casual“ 5K option of eating one kolache during the 5K.

And forget Gatorade as after-race refueling. Following the run, participants can savor more Kolache Factory kolaches in the post-race area and – take this Gatorade – one free beer for participants 21 and older.

File this one as “Only in Texas.”

Plus, the first 1,000 5K registrations will receive a custom die-cast 5K Finishers Medal. Other race goodies include a tech performance t-shirt and a commemorative participant bib.

In this food-obsessed city, it seems only natural that a run finally pay tribute to one of this area’s most popular pastries, those satisfying meat-filled and fruit-topped puffy cushions of delectable dough brought here by the many Czech immigrants that settled in agricultural places near old Addicks and outside Houston.

“We are thrilled to be the title sponsor of this exciting new event” says Dawn Nielsen, chief operating officer of Kolache Factory. “We hope all the participants have fun and enjoy our kolaches during and after the 5K.”

Even more appetizing, all net proceeds from the event will benefit Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM), which has been assisting families financially and with new clothing and furniture in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

“We are excited to be working with the Energy Corridor District and the Kolache Factory Challenge 5K,” says Christina Finley, development officer at Memorial Assistance Ministries. “Not only will this be a truly fun event, but it will directly help families and individuals meet their basic needs.”

Kolache Factory Challenge 5K will take place May 5 at the Addicks Park and Ride, right off IH-10 near Hwy 6, at 14230 Katy Freeway.

Sign up here for the challenge. The cost is $40 from April 1-27 and $45 the week of the event. Families are encouraged to participate together. There will also be a Kids 1K event for children 12 that will take place one hour after the event which costs $20.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available by emailing info@houstoncorporate5k.com, or by calling 832-974-1690.
