The Greater West Houston Mobility Plan – a collaborative project led by multiple agencies and The Energy Corridor District – received a Connection Award during the inaugural Our Great Region Awards presented by the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) in December.
H-GAC launched its Our Great Region Awards to recognize outstanding projects in its eight-county constituency that advance economic development, resiliency and transportation strategies through innovative partnerships.
Lead project partners for the Greater West Houston Mobility Plan – including the West Houston Association, City of Houston, and The Energy Corridor, Memorial and Westchase Management Districts – collaborated on a holistic approach to address current and future transportation demands, plus land-use needs for the sprawling and growing West Houston region.
“It’s an effort that’s paved the way for continued collaboration and coordination on projects that require leveraging limited resources to provide multimodal connections to, from and within the region,” says Kelly Rector, TDM program manager for The Energy Corridor District.
Completed in 2014, the Greater West Houston Mobility Plan examines improved transportation strategies for freeways, tollways, local streets, transit, and pedestrian and bicycle networks. A series of short, medium and long-range projects were identified to help improve mobility throughout the study area. For more information about the Greater West Houston Mobility Plan, visit here.
Ultimately, explains Rector, the Greater West Houston Mobility Plan supports and promotes shared goals of the partner organizations, advancing their respective missions to create and sustain high-quality, vibrant places that are attractive to businesses, residents, and visitors, and balance a spectrum of needs and interests in the context of a dynamically evolving region.
ECD Board President and West Houston Association Board Member David Hightower accepted the Connection Award on behalf of the partners.
The awards were designed to honor efforts that promote goals developed by H-GAC for its “Our Great Region 2040” plan, a high-level blueprint focused on making the Gulf Coast region a better place to live, work, and succeed – with measureable goals – by the year 2040, according to H-GAC. More than 30 local governments and organizations submitted applications to compete across five award categories. See a complete list of award recipients here.
