Celebrate the Power of the Pedal: May is National Bike Month

May is National Bike Month, a time to showcase the benefits of bicycling while encouraging people to try some pedal-powered fun.

Sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike Month is a venerable event, one established in 1956 and celebrated in communities coast to coast.

From May 14-18, National Bike to Work Week takes place, when communities hold events to promote bicycling into work. The City of Houston’s annual Bike to Work day will be Friday, May 18.

There are several bicycling-related National Bike Month events happening throughout Houston. Check them out by visiting BikeHouston’s calendar here

Riding in May can also mean earning prizes for bicyclists of all abilities.

The 2018 National Bike Challenge begins May 1. The League of American Bicyclists and Love to Ride have joined forces to offer a free and easy way to challenge individuals, colleagues and community members to ride more often – while earning opportunities to win prizes. All riders are invited to join, from casual recreational ones to veteran bicycling commuters. Register for the challenge online here.

National Bike Month was developed to celebrate the power of the bicycle, while embracing all the reasons people pedal. Whether to get to work or school or to run errands, pedaling can save time and money, says the League of American Bicyclists, while preserving physical well-being and the environment.

For many, Bike Month is simply a good excuse to explore their community. Bicyclists who want to explore the Energy Corridor can check out the District’s Bike / Walk online page, where you can download bicycling commute routes, local Bikeways map or Rules of the Road, as well as view bike safety tips.
